pH

The pH balance of the human bloodstream is one of the most important biochemical balances in the human body. The body will actually deposit and withdraw minerals from within itself in order to maintain a proper pH. A proper pH is also required to achieve good health, improve immunity and stay at a healthy weight. The more unbalanced pH levels are, the more the individual is likely to develop health problems or struggle with his weight. Additionally, feeling tired, lethargic or generally unwell are symptoms of an unbalanced pH level within the body.

Description
1. The term “pH” stands for “Potential Hydrogen” and pH levels control the speed of the body’s biochemical reactions. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14.
The pH Scale
2. On the scale, 7.0 is neutral. Any value above or below 7.0 is considered acidic or alkaline. For example, 0 to 7 represents acidic foods and 7.1 to 14 represents alkaline foods.
Classification
3. All foods are classified as alkalizing or acidifying based on the effect the food has on urine pH after consumption. If a food increases the acidity of urine after consumption, it is classified as an acidic food. Conversely, if a food increases the alkalinity of urine after consumption, it is classified as an alkalizing food. Most vegetables are an example of alkalizing foods and all meats are an example of acidic foods.
Normal pH Levels
4. The body tries to maintain an alkalizing pH of 7.35-7.45, with 7.4 being the general average. Eating a diet rich in alkalizing foods helps the body maintain a 7.4 pH balance.
Other Considerations
5. A few non-food sources also can effect the pH of urine. For instance, probiotics, often found in yogurt, create an acidic environment in the digestive tract. Soft water also tends to be acidic, along with distilled water, because the water has little to no minerals but mineral water and hard water, conversely, are alkalizing. Additionally, antibiotics, mineral supplements, vitamins and antacids can affect the pH of urine.
Acidic Foods
6. Acidic foods should be avoided and eaten sparingly. The least acidic foods are kidney beans, string beans, plums, store-bought juices, spelt, brown rice, rye bread, sprouted breads, organ meats, cold water fish, eggs, pumpkin, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, corn oil, fatty dairy products, margarine and honey. Moreover, skinless potatoes, pinto beans, navy beans, lima beans, canned fruits, white rice, oats, pecans, cashews, pistachios, coffee, wine, chicken, turkey, lamb, raw dairy and most condiments are moderately acidic. Lastly, blueberries, cranberries, prunes, wheat, white bread, pasta, beef, pork, shellfish, cheese, ice cream, peanuts, walnuts, beer and alcohol are highly acidic foods.
Alkaline Foods
7. Citrus fruits except oranges, watermelons, mango, papaya, asparagus, onions, vegetable juices, parsley, spinach, broccoli, garlic, barley, olive oil and grape seed oil are highly alkaline. Moderately alkaline foods include most dried fruits, melons, grapes, apples, pears, kiwis, okra, squash, green beans, beets, celery, lettuce, zucchini and sweet potatoes. Lastly, amaranth, quinoa , millet, lentils, wild rice, corn, oranges, bananas, cherries, pineapple, peaches, avocados, carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, cabbage, peas, cauliflower, turnips, olives, canola oil, raw sugar, coconuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, goat cheeses, whey and soy products are low alkalizing foods.
